Types Of Running Events
People run for a lot of different reasons; the first of which is definitely the health benefits. In addition to that benefit, people also derive pleasure from the experience, whether it is competitive or not. However, competitive running can lead you to push your goals to the limit and can add a more exciting element to your routine. Different types of running events with an element of competition include track running, road running, cross-country running, trail running, fell running and relay races.
Track running is one of most widely recognized types of running events, since it is and has been part of the Olympic games for a very long time. Running doesn’t require any equipment except for some lightweight shoes and comfortable clothing, so the Track and Field events at the Olympics very literally level the playing field for competitors. In this sport, money and facilities are not as important as sheer will and determination. Running on a track is also easier on the ankles than on a harsh road or rocky terrain.

A popular non-professional type of running event is road running. Many amateurs do this for exercise, but also many marathons take place on roads. Cross-country running is a term for any running event with some distance. This type of running event is most often termed this at the high school and Collegiate levels. Cross-country running can be of varied distances depending on the track or field on which the race is being run.
Trail running can also be a pleasurable or competitive type of running event. The equipment needed for this might include a hat or some protection from ticks, which often fall from trees. The scenery will be a great motivating factor for someone who needs a little outside determination to cover long distances. This can be a great way to explore new places and parks around your area in a short amount of time.
Fell running is one of the most exciting types of running events. Many different skills besides physical skills are needed to excel at this type of running event. This event takes place on mountain ranges, and requires survival and navigation skills. The distance is often spread out over a few days and there are many different variables that can affect someone’s performance in fell running.
Another type of running event that is widely recognized is the relay race. This is also played at the Olympic level, and requires some skill to not drop the relay stick. This disaster most often occurs in between passing the baton.
