Running is one of the best aerobic and anaerobic exercises you can do for your body and mental health. The health benefits are numerable, and being physically fit has proven to ward off depression. Runners can see their improvement grow as the distances of their runs lengthen. With a few tips, running can become a safe, integral part of your new healthful life.

One of the best safety tips for girls or women running is to be wary about wearing headphones or listening to an iPod while running. It is hard to know everything that is going on around you if you can’t hear. The music may be a motivating factor for you, but this is often only because it is a distraction. Try to think of a funny story or a good memory. If you run out of things to think about start thinking of to-do lists or something creative that you can do later. Oftentimes girls and women run by themselves, which is also not very safe to do sometimes because when you become tired, it is often visibly perceptible. Men and women can also benefit from not wearing headphones if you run, as many runners do, in a street or at any crossroads. Headphones are good to wear in a gym, though.

There is another benefit to taking those headphones off and finding a running buddy. If you are having trouble finding the right pace at which to run, talk to your running buddy. Experts say that when you are training for any type of running event, you should be moving at a conversational pace. This is to say that you should be able to comfortably hold a conversation while running. Talking may shorten your runs at first since you need more oxygen when you are speaking and running, but it will benefit you in the long run, so to speak. Many runners run too fast or too hard too often a week. You should only run harder or faster than you normally do one or two times a week.

Another training tip for running is to try to run into the wind at the beginning of your run, especially in cold weather. Since you generate more and more heat as you run, turning around after you have warmed up into a freezing wind can make you extremely uncomfortable. This can also help reduce the amount of wetness that stays on your clothes.
