The Los Angeles marathon was begun because of the success of the marathon at the 1984 Olympics. The course passes through many landmarks throughout the city including passing through downtown, Koreatown, and the Crenshaw district. The runners get a lot of support from many fans, reported to be around 1 million, and it is even by name because each participant gets a personalized bib with their name. In 2007 the race featured a new course that started at Universal Studios Hollywood. Its primary sponsors have been Honda and Banco Popular. First place winners for 2007 won $35,000 and a Honda Accord. The Los Angeles marathon Web site gives opportunity for volunteers to help out. It also gives resources to accommodate travelers. They can make travel and hotel arrangements with help from the site. They can also identify different attractions or amusement parks in the LA area. There is even a link for buying TV show tickets to shows such as Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

LA Marathon Map
The official Web site of the LA marathon contains a map of the route and much more information. Like other sites there are many different resources available for the prospective runner. This includes links to training resources, this time in the form of the Los Angels Roadrunners and Devine Sports. There is a very detailed map on About.com that displays the route for the marathon as well as various transportation system routes. There are also routes for various other races on this map such as the bike race, 5K race and wheelchair race. It also gives the street closures for any interested citizens.
Los Angeles Marathon Medals
A view of the medals of the Los Angeles marathon can be seen on Wikipedia. Other prizes include the previously listed Honda Accord and money. There is also a newer award of $100,000 given to the first runner who crosses the finish line. The elite women are given a head start and the elite men start, derived from the previous year’s course records. Thus the Banco Popular Challenge has begun. In its three year history it has been won by a female competitor twice.
